The newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka has pledged to explore the establishment of a passenger ferry service connecting all ports of Sri Lanka to India.
This announcement came following a pivotal meeting on December 28, 2023, between the Indian High Commissioner and Sri Lanka's Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation, Nimal Siripala de Silva.
The comprehensive discussions at the Ministry covered the progress of various strategic projects, including those at the Palali airport, and the development of ports in Kankesanthurai, Talaimannar, and Trincomalee.
The Indian High Commissioner underscored the commitment of the Indian government to bolstering the maritime and aviation sectors in Sri Lanka, further expressing a dedication to contributing to the development of the northern region of the country.
Minister de Silva reciprocated by highlighting the Sri Lankan government's eagerness to facilitate opportunities for Indian investors interested in the maritime and aviation services sectors. He particularly emphasized the potential for investment in the Trincomalee Port area, highlighting opportunities in ship and small craft building industries.
Moreover, Minister de Silva assured that Indian technology and investors would be welcomed to support the initiation of renewable energy projects in Sri Lanka.
High Commissioner Jha emphasized the collaborative efforts between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickramasinghe. He highlighted the diplomatic synergy aimed at fostering regional development and cooperation, noting that the proposed passenger ferry service aligns with the shared vision of both leaders to strengthen ties and promote economic growth between India and Sri Lanka.
The discussions indicate a promising step toward enhancing connectivity and economic collaboration between the two neighboring nations.
