The All Ceylon Filling Station Owners' Association (ACFSOA) reports a substantial decline in fuel usage during the recent long weekend when compared to previous years, according to ACFSOA President Shelton Fernando.
Fernando revealed that the demand for fuel during the festive season plummeted by 50%, posing significant challenges for filling station owners. The decrease in fuel consumption has been attributed to the prevailing economic conditions, prompting the ACFSOA to appeal to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) for substantial concessions to alleviate the burdens faced by consumers and station proprietors alike.
Given the recent surge in fuel prices, individuals have curtailed long-distance travels in their personal vehicles, opting instead for more cost-effective means such as public transportation. The trend is evident in reduced fuel competitions, with a majority of vehicle owners limiting their usage to essential purposes only.
Fernando highlighted the observable shift in behavior, stating, "Three-wheelers and motorcycles are refilling their tanks in smaller quantities. This trend is particularly noticeable in filling stations across the provinces, leading to a significant downturn in fuel sales."
In light of these developments, the ACFSOA emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts to address the challenges faced by both consumers and filling station proprietors, underscoring the importance of considering concessions to sustain a balanced and accessible fuel market.
