Approximately 5,000 vehicles have been fraudulently registered, causing the Government to lose millions of rupees in tax revenue, Commission to Investigate Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) said
The Commission disclosed that this organized large-scale fraud, which is depriving the Government of billions in tax revenue, is currently under investigation by the Intelligence Division of the CIABOC.
In connection with the fraudulent registration of a luxury Mini Cooper, the Commission has imposed a foreign travel ban on five officials of the Motor Traffic Department.
The ban, enacted under the Bribery or Corruption Amendment Act No. 20 of 1994, is a response to charges filed against these officials before the Colombo High Court on December 22.
The Commission alleges that these officials manipulated the data of a three-wheeler imported to Sri Lanka in 2017, replacing it with the registration of a Mini Cooper imported in 2015, resulting in a government tax loss of Rs. 2.5 million.
