The Human Trafficking, Human Smuggling, and Maritime Crimes Division of Sri Lanka's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has initiated two special investigations into a case of cyber slavery involving a group of Sri Lankans in Myanmar, as reported by Sri Lanka Police.
Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa confirmed ongoing investigations into four suspects, including three Sri Lankans and a Chinese national, based on four complaints received by the police.
Following recent revelation of 56 Sri Lankans being forcibly detained in a Burmese terrorist camp and exploited as cyber slaves, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sought the assistance of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Yangon to rescue those affected.
This disturbing trend has reportedly affected Sri Lankan youths since 2022, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs having previously rescued 32 individuals on different occasions.
In light of these developments, the police advise the public to exercise caution when traveling abroad for work, especially on tourist visas.
Furthermore, recent CID findings disclosed the identification of three individuals involved in trafficking Sri Lankans to Myanmar. The suspects, residents of Aralaganwila, Wathuregama, and Dorathiyawa areas, have reportedly fled their locations.
