The Ministry of Health has provided an update on the mysterious deaths of two prison inmates at Galle Prison. After conducting preliminary investigations, it has been determined that the cause of death was Meningococcal disease.
According to the Health Ministry, both inmates were infected with the Meningococcus bacteria, which is known to cause Meningococcal disease. This information sheds light on the previously unexplained deaths.
In addition to the fatalities, sixteen other inmates are currently undergoing treatment for the same infection. The Health Ministry is actively monitoring the situation and taking appropriate measures to prevent further spread.
Meanwhile, the Prisons Department has identified the deceased inmates as remand prisoners who fell ill suddenly. Symptoms including fever and phlegm have been observed among those affected.
With a total of 1,023 prisoners housed at Galle Prison, authorities are working diligently to contain the outbreak and ensure the safety and well-being of all inmates.
