The Department of Meteorology has warned of dangerous sea conditions in the Bay of Bengal due to Cyclone Arnab, which is expected to make landfall along the coast of Andhra Pradesh, India, on October 28.
According to a weather advisory issued on October 27, 2026, wind speeds in the sea area between latitudes 10°N and 20°N and longitudes 80°E and 95°E could increase to between 80 and 140 km/h, while wave heights could reach 3.0 to 4.0 metres.
The fishing community has been strongly advised to avoid these deep-sea areas due to the prevailing hazardous conditions.
Meanwhile, the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has reported that approximately 25 Sri Lankan multi-day fishing vessels are currently operating or remaining in waters near India.
Considering the difficulties these vessels face in returning to Sri Lanka amid the cyclone, the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources has taken urgent measures to ensure their safety.
Following a special request made to the Indian Government through the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka, permission has been obtained for the vessels to enter Indian waters to seek shelter from the dangerous weather conditions.
The vessels have also been instructed to immediately move away from the affected areas and proceed to safe locations in accordance with the guidance issued by the Department of Meteorology.
Furthermore, the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has officially informed the owners of vessels operating in the affected sea areas about the procedures they must follow under the prevailing conditions.
The Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources has urged the entire fishing community to remain vigilant and closely monitor future weather advisories.
