The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the publication of a new Sri Lanka Cricket Bill aimed at reorganizing the administration of cricket in Sri Lanka.
The decision was taken at the Cabinet meeting on June 8, 2026. Under the proposed legislation, Sri Lanka Cricket will be empowered to govern, control, regulate, promote, develop and administer cricket in the country.
The Bill, prepared by the Legal Draftsman, sets out provisions covering the establishment, powers and functions of Sri Lanka Cricket. It seeks to strengthen the administration of the sport through principles of good governance, integrity, transparency and accountability.
The proposed legislation also focuses on inclusion and equal opportunities for cricket participants, while providing measures to safeguard their welfare. It includes provisions aimed at protecting cricket from corruption and other improper activities.
The Bill has received clearance from the Attorney General. Following Cabinet approval, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports has been authorized to publish it in the Government Gazette before submitting it to Parliament for approval.
If passed by Parliament, the legislation will establish a new legal framework for the governance and development of cricket in Sri Lanka.
