Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today issued a warrant for former Minister Wimal Weerawansa after he failed to appear before court in connection with a 2016 protest that disrupted traffic near the United Nations office in Thummulla, Colombo.

Weerawansa has been named as a suspect in the case relating to the protest, which took place during the visit of former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein to Sri Lanka.

The case was taken up before the Colombo Chief Magistrate today. However, Weerawansa was absent from court when the matter was called.

Following his failure to appear, the Magistrate issued a warrant for his arrest.

The case relates to the alleged obstruction of roads and disruption of traffic around the UN office in Thummulla during the protest in 2016. Further proceedings are expected to continue before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.
