Two spill gates of the Kalawewa Reservoir have been opened by six inches each due to rising water levels, reservoir engineers have announced.

The two spill gates are currently releasing 505 cubic feet of water per second into the Kala Oya. Including the 1,457 cubic feet per second being released through irrigation canals, the total water discharge from the reservoir stands at 1,962 cubic feet per second.

Meanwhile, water continues to flow into the Kalawewa Reservoir at a rate of 2,280 cubic feet per second through the Dambulu Oya and other water sources.

Engineers have clarified that the current situation does not pose an immediate flood or disaster threat. However, if rainfall continues, additional spill gates may need to be opened.

The engineering office has therefore advised residents living along both banks of the Kala Oya to remain vigilant and exercise caution.
