The Meteorology Department has warned that widespread rainfall is expected across Sri Lanka over the next 10 days, with the prevailing El Niño condition potentially increasing the risk of heavy rain, floods and landslides.
Meteorology Department Director General Ajith Wijemanne, speaking at a media briefing today (16), said preparations were underway to face the effects of El Niño, but authorities and the public should remain vigilant as extreme weather conditions could intensify in the coming months.
He said October and November traditionally experience continuous weather disturbances in the Bay of Bengal, which could become more severe under El Niño conditions, resulting in increased rainfall and a heightened risk of floods and landslides.
Wijemanne said heavier rainfall was expected in the northeastern region in December, while the Northern and Eastern Provinces were forecast to receive normal rainfall.
However, he warned that the prevailing Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) condition could still lead to flooding in those areas.
Looking further ahead, he said the period from February to April 2027 was likely to bring higher temperatures and reduced rainfall, highlighting the need for careful management of water resources in the months ahead.
