The Irrigation Department has opened four spill gates at the Tabbowa Reservoir to manage the increasing volume of water flowing into the reservoir, located in the Mee Oya river basin.
Accordingly, two spill gates have been opened by two feet each, while the other two have been opened by one foot each, releasing water into the Mee Oya at a rate of 2,640 cubic feet per second, the department said.
Residents living downstream of the reservoir and along both banks of the Mee Oya have been urged to remain vigilant and monitor changes in water levels.
They have also been advised to follow instructions and warnings issued by the Irrigation Department and disaster management authorities.
