Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser and Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa has requested the Secretary General of Parliament, Attorney-at-Law Kushani Rohanadeera, to make the necessary arrangements for him to attend upcoming parliamentary sittings.
Rajapaksa made the request in a letter sent to the Secretary General today (7), as Parliament is scheduled to meet from tomorrow (8) until September 11.
Responding to the request, the Secretary General of Parliament has informed the Commissioner General of Prisons to make the necessary arrangements for Rajapaksa to be brought to Parliament to participate in the sittings.
Accordingly, Rajapaksa is expected to attend Parliament tomorrow while remaining in remand custody.
Rajapaksa is currently being held at the Colombo Remand Prison after the Colombo Chief Magistrate ordered that he be remanded until September 18. He was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on September 4 in connection with an investigation into an alleged Rs. 100 million bribery transaction linked to the acquisition of aircraft for SriLankan Airlines.
Rajapaksa has denied wrongdoing in the case. His remand order was issued by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama after he was produced before court following several hours of questioning by CIABOC.
Prison authorities have also confirmed that Rajapaksa has been granted permission to receive food from home, while only three people per day are permitted to visit him. Special security arrangements have reportedly been put in place around the ward where he is being held.
