Veteran Sri Lankan artist and cinema scientist Givantha Arthasad, regarded as the creator of Sri Lanka’s first animated cartoon film, has passed away at the Panadura Base Hospital, according to reports.
Arthasad, the brother of veteran film director Dinesh Priyasad, was a pioneer in animation and special effects and made significant contributions to Sri Lanka’s cinema, radio and television industries.
He created Dutugemunu, released in 1979, which is regarded as Sri Lanka’s first animated cartoon film.
A multi-talented artist, Arthasad also excelled in painting, cinematography, makeup, art direction and film grammar. He was the author of Cinema – Maya, a notable publication on cinema technology and film language.
He also served as the Director General of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation.
Arthasad’s contribution to the development of animation, visual effects, cinema technology and broadcasting in Sri Lanka is widely recognized.
His remains are currently lying at No. 35/4, Temple Road, Moratumulla, Moratuwa, from 10.30 p.m. on September 3 until 4.00 p.m. today (September 4).
House prayers will be held at 4.00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at the Moratumulla Methodist Church. His remains will thereafter be buried at the Methodist Church Cemetery in Moratumulla.
