The period for filing petitions challenging the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution Bill, which was presented to Parliament by the Government, ended today (31).
The Bill was presented to Parliament on the 18th by Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara.
Following its presentation, several parties, including the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, political parties and civil society organisations, filed petitions before the Supreme Court challenging the proposed constitutional amendment.
The petitions have raised concerns regarding several provisions contained in the 22nd Amendment Bill and have sought the intervention of the Supreme Court.
The petitioners have also requested the Supreme Court to determine whether the Bill, in its present form, is consistent with the Constitution.
The Supreme Court is expected to communicate its determination on the petitions to Parliament in due course.
