Cabinet Minister Nalinda Jayatissa has said he will investigate the circumstances surrounding the treatment of Ishara Sewwandi while she was being taken to court, following questions over whether she received preferential treatment during the transfer.
Responding to a journalist’s question at the Cabinet briefing, Jayatissa stressed that the law must be applied equally to everyone.
The issue was raised after Sewwandi was seen being taken to court without handcuffs and carrying a bag, prompting questions over whether she had been afforded privileges not normally extended to other suspects.
Jayatissa said he would look into the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine why she was transported under those conditions.
He reiterated that no individual should receive preferential treatment and that the law must be enforced equally.
