A joint mechanism comprising prison officials, the Police, the Special Task Force (STF) and, where necessary, the Tri-Forces will be established next week to strengthen the safety and welfare of inmates across Sri Lanka’s 33 prisons.
The decision was taken during a special meeting held today (07) at the Presidential Secretariat under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to review the current situation in prisons and measures required to ensure inmate security.
During the meeting, officials discussed additional steps needed to enhance the safety and protection of prisoners islandwide.
The newly established mechanism will assess issues faced by inmates, oversee their welfare, and coordinate appropriate responses during emergency situations. It will also hold discussions with prison inmates as part of its duties.
