The Central Crimes Investigation Unit (CCIU) today (August 6) informed the Kaduwela Magistrate's Court that it has commenced an investigation into a statement made by Member of Parliament Sagara Kariyawasam concerning Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya, following allegations that the remarks amounted to a threat against the IGP.
Appearing before the court, Assistant Superintendent of Police Kamal Ariyawansa, Director of the Central Crimes Investigation Unit, stated that further investigations are being carried out into the incident and sought the court's permission to proceed with the inquiry.
Accordingly, Kaduwela Chief Magistrate Arun Indrajith Buddhadasa granted approval for the investigators to continue the probe.
