Sri Lanka's Opposition has proposed the appointment of a special parliamentary committee to recommend measures for expediting court proceedings, citing a significant backlog of cases within the country's judicial system.
According to the proposal, data from the Ministry of Justice indicates that approximately 1.1 million cases are currently pending before Sri Lankan courts.
The motion, led by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, was signed on August 3 by him and members of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) parliamentary group. The proposal is scheduled to be formally handed over to the Speaker of Parliament on August 4.
The proposed special committee is expected to study the causes of delays in the judicial process and submit recommendations aimed at accelerating the disposal of pending cases and improving the efficiency of the court system.
