The police curfew imposed in three Grama Niladhari (GN) Divisions within the Ragama Police Division following the unrest at Mahara Prison has been lifted, Police announced.
The curfew had been enforced in the GN Divisions of 246 Kendaliyadda Road - West, 246 C Kendaliyadda Road - North, and 181 G - Dambuwa, which are located in the vicinity of the Mahara Prison complex. Authorities said the restrictions were introduced as a precautionary measure following the prison unrest.
Meanwhile, the Department of Prisons confirmed that 20 inmates from Mahara Prison have been transferred to Boossa Prison as part of ongoing efforts to restore normalcy and manage the prison population.
In addition, another group of inmates is scheduled to be transferred to Badulla, Vavuniya, and Welikada prisons. Prison officials stated that the transfers are being carried out as part of security and administrative measures in the aftermath of the incident.
Authorities have not reported any further disturbances following the lifting of the curfew, while security around the prison remains under close monitoring.
