Two spill gates at the Polgolla Mahaweli Dam have been opened by two feet each as a precautionary measure to reduce the risk of flooding following heavy rainfall affecting several districts across Sri Lanka.
The decision was taken today (August 2) by the Office of the Engineer-in-Charge of the Polgolla Mahaweli Dam.
According to the Engineer-in-Charge's Office, the opening of the spill gates is releasing approximately 3,940 cubic feet of water per second into the Victoria Reservoir to regulate rising water levels.
Authorities have advised residents living in low-lying areas and along riverbanks downstream to remain vigilant and follow instructions issued by disaster management and local authorities as adverse weather conditions continue.
