An inmate who was injured during the unrest at Mahara Prison has died while receiving treatment at the Ragama Teaching Hospital, hospital sources said.
The inmate was among seven prisoners admitted to the hospital after sustaining injuries during the incident.
The unrest prompted authorities to deploy additional security forces to the prison, with several special police teams dispatched to assess and manage the situation.
Security was also strengthened around the prison, with Police and the Special Task Force (STF) deployed to maintain order and prevent any further escalation.
The cause of the unrest has not yet been disclosed, and further investigations are underway.
