The Department of Irrigation has warned that low-lying areas along the Kelani River valley could experience minor flooding within the next 48 hours due to heavy rainfall in the river's upper and middle catchment areas.
According to the Department, significant high-intensity rainfall has been recorded across the Kelani River basin. Based on the current rainfall conditions and an analysis of water-level data from river gauges, authorities have identified the possibility of a minor flood situation developing in vulnerable areas.
The warning applies to low-lying areas within the Dehiowita, Ruwanwella, and Seethawaka Divisional Secretariat Divisions.
The Department further noted that weather forecasts indicate the likelihood of continued heavy rainfall, which could result in a rapid rise in river water levels.
Residents living in low-lying areas, river users, and motorists traveling through the affected regions have been urged to remain vigilant and exercise extreme caution over the next 48 hours.
Authorities advised the public to stay updated with official weather and flood warnings and to follow instructions issued by disaster management and local authorities.
