Pathirage's remarkable performance ended Sri Lanka's 20-year wait for a Commonwealth Games gold medal. The country's previous gold came at the 2006 Melbourne Games when weightlifter Chinthana Vidanage topped the podium.
India's Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra claimed the silver medal with a best effort of 85.83m, while compatriot Yash Vir Singh secured bronze after throwing 85.41m.
Olympic bronze medallist Anderson Peters of Grenada finished fourth with 83.88m, while Pakistan's reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem endured a disappointing outing, placing ninth with a best throw of 77.41m.
Pathirage had comfortably booked his place in the final with a qualifying throw of 82.84m before delivering the performance of his career on the biggest stage.
The historic triumph also earned Sri Lanka its second medal of the 2026 Commonwealth Games and marked one of the greatest achievements in the country's athletics history.
