Sri Lanka Customs has made 55 drug-related arrests since October 30 last year, seizing narcotics valued at approximately Rs. 4.5 billion, officials said.
Customs authorities noted a growing trend of traffickers using younger individuals to smuggle illegal drugs into the country. Investigations have also identified that many of those arrested for carrying narcotics were suffering from social disorders, according to officials.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Customs stressed that it will not allow the country to become a transshipment hub for international drug trafficking, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening border security and combating narcotics smuggling.
The department also urged the public, particularly air travelers, not to carry any parcel or baggage that does not belong to them under any circumstances, warning that doing so could lead to serious legal consequences.
