The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has suspended fishing activities in several sea areas around Sri Lanka until further notice due to adverse weather conditions.
According to the department, the suspension applies to sea areas stretching from Kankesanthurai to Kalpitiya and from Hambantota to Pottuvil.
The decision was taken following a Red Alert issued by the Department of Meteorology, which warned of strong winds reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h and very rough sea conditions.
Authorities have advised all fishermen currently at sea to return to shore safely as soon as possible. Those planning to venture out have been urged not to do so and to closely monitor official weather updates and instructions issued by the relevant authorities.
The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources said the fishing ban will remain in effect until further notice, emphasizing that the measure has been introduced to ensure the safety of the fishing community amid the prevailing hazardous weather conditions.
