The number of dengue cases reported in Sri Lanka this year has exceeded 84,000, according to the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), highlighting the continued spread of the mosquito-borne disease across the country.
Health authorities said a total of 84,091 dengue cases have been recorded so far this year. No dengue-related deaths were reported yesterday, keeping the cumulative death toll at 61 for the year.
Gampaha Reports Highest Number of Cases
The Gampaha District has recorded the highest number of dengue infections nationwide, with 17,850 cases reported to date.
The Colombo District follows closely with 16,716 cases, making the two districts the most affected areas in the country.
Western Province Continues to Lead
The Western Province remains the worst-affected region, accounting for 44,552 dengue cases so far this year.
Meanwhile, the Southern Province has reported the second-highest provincial total, with 12,656 cases recorded during the same period.
175 High-Risk Areas Under Surveillance
The National Dengue Control Unit has identified 175 dengue high-risk zones across the island and warned that the disease continues to spread.
Health officials have urged the public to eliminate mosquito breeding sites by removing stagnant water from their surroundings, maintaining clean premises, and cooperating with vector control programmes. Residents experiencing symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea, or skin rashes are advised to seek immediate medical attention.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while strengthening dengue prevention and awareness campaigns in high-risk areas.
