The University of Colombo has once again been ranked the No. 1 university in Sri Lanka in the July 2026 edition of the Webometrics Ranking of Universities, reaffirming its position as the country's leading higher education institution.

Globally, the University of Colombo is ranked 1,745th among more than 32,000 higher education institutions (HEIs) across over 200 countries, reflecting its growing international academic and research presence.

The Webometrics Ranking evaluates universities based on three key indicators: Visibility (50%), which measures the impact of external networks linking to the university's domain; Excellence (40%), which assesses research publications among the world's top 10% most-cited papers across 27 disciplines between 2021 and 2025; and Openness (10%), which considers citations received by institutions with a registered Research Organization Registry (ROR) identifier.

According to the University of Colombo, the achievement underscores the institution's continued commitment to academic excellence, high-quality research, and enhancing its global research impact.
