The 1990 Suwa Seriya Foundation has announced plans to introduce a motorcycle-based emergency medical service as part of efforts to improve emergency response times and provide faster medical assistance to patients in urgent need.
According to the foundation, the initiative is aimed at enhancing access to emergency medical care, particularly in areas where heavy traffic congestion and road obstructions frequently delay ambulance services.
The motorcycle emergency units will initially be deployed in densely populated urban areas, including Colombo and other major cities, where ambulances often face difficulties reaching patients quickly due to traffic.
Under the programme, specially trained medical officers will operate motorcycles equipped with essential medicines, first aid supplies, and emergency medical equipment. The primary objective of the service is to provide immediate first aid and basic medical support to patients until a fully equipped ambulance arrives at the scene.
The foundation stated that the motorcycle emergency response service will be introduced as a pilot project before the end of the year. If successful, the programme is expected to strengthen Sri Lanka's pre-hospital emergency care system by reducing response times and improving patient outcomes during medical emergencies.
