The annual Kavadi procession at the Devinuwara Uthpalawanna Sri Vishnu Devalaya has been the subject of widespread public debate in recent weeks.
The controversy followed a decision by the Basnayake Nilame and the festival committee to restrict participation by removing several Kavadi groups that had previously been accused of drug use and inappropriate behaviour, allowing only a limited number of groups to take part in this year's procession.
The decision sparked both support and opposition, with protests being held by those for and against the restrictions.
Meanwhile, a man alleged to be organised crime figure "Kanjipani Imran" reportedly issued death threats against the Basnayake Nilame, demanding that all Kavadi groups be allowed to participate in the festival.
Against this backdrop, police conducted thorough inspections of Kavadi groups arriving in Devinuwara to participate in the traditional dance procession. During one such inspection, officers allegedly recovered cannabis and crystal methamphetamine from a group of participants.
The three suspects arrested in connection with the seizure are scheduled to be produced before the Matara Magistrate's Court for further legal proceedings.
