A no-confidence motion submitted by the opposition against Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara is scheduled to be debated in Parliament today (24).
According to the Department of Communications of Parliament, the decision to take up the motion for debate was made during a meeting of the Committee on Parliamentary Business held last Wednesday.
The opposition formally handed over the no-confidence motion to Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne on July 21.
The motion alleges that the Justice Minister failed to uphold his responsibility and accountability regarding the safety of inmates and prison officers during the incident at Negombo Prison. The debate is expected to provide an opportunity for both the government and the opposition to present their positions on the matter.
