The price of oil surged to almost $99 a barrel on Thursday morning, as Iran’s Houthi allies in Yemen claimed strikes overnight on two Saudi tankers in the Red Sea, and neither the United States nor Iran showed any letup in their fighting.
The Houthis’ strikes were the first since the group announced a blockade on Saudi ships earlier this week. President Trump said Thursday that he would hold Iran responsible for any further attacks in the Red Sea and threatened to widen the conflict to include the Houthis. Trump said on social media that the Houthis had “acted very responsibly” since a U.S. offensive against the group last year and throughout the war with Iran this year, but added that he was “very disappointed” by the renewed attacks.
