Sri Lanka's passport has improved its global standing, rising to 94th place in the 2026 Henley Passport Index, marking its highest ranking in recent years.
According to the latest edition of the index, Sri Lanka moved up from 96th place, where it was ranked in both 2024 and 2025. The country's passport has shown steady progress over the past several years, climbing from 107th in 2021 to 102nd in 2022, 100th in 2023, and now reaching 94th in 2026.
The Henley Passport Index ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without obtaining a visa in advance. The annual index is widely regarded as a key measure of global travel freedom and international mobility.
In the 2026 rankings, Singapore retained its position as the world's most powerful passport, offering its citizens the highest level of visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to destinations worldwide. At the other end of the index, Afghanistan ranked last, placing 104th.
The 2026 Henley Passport Index evaluates 199 passports across 227 travel destinations, providing a comprehensive comparison of passport strength based on visa-free access and ease of international travel.
Sri Lanka's improved ranking reflects a gradual enhancement in the country's global travel mobility, although further progress will depend on future bilateral visa agreements and international diplomatic engagement.
