The Government has spent a total of Rs. 26,278,052 on the maintenance of the wife and children of Rohana Wijeweera, the founder of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), Parliament was informed on Tuesday (July 21).
The information was disclosed in response to a question raised by Kurunegala District MP Dayasiri Jayasekara. The written reply was tabled in Parliament by Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd.).
According to the official response, the annual expenditure on the family's maintenance has increased significantly over the years. The allocation, which stood at approximately Rs. 26,309.63 in 1993, rose to Rs. 2,823,590.50 in 2025.
The response further revealed that the Government has already spent Rs. 272,245 on the family's maintenance during 2026 up to the date of the parliamentary disclosure.
The figures were presented as part of a parliamentary question seeking details of the State expenditure incurred for the maintenance of the late JVP founder's immediate family over the years.
