Parliament will debate the no-confidence motion against Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara on Friday, July 24, following a decision by the Committee on Parliamentary Business, which met at the Parliament Complex today.
The motion was officially handed over to Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne on July 21 by a group of opposition Members of Parliament.
Speaking to the media, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Gayantha Karunathilleka said the opposition requested that the motion be taken up for debate at the earliest possible date.
Meanwhile, SJB MP Ajith P. Perera accused the Justice Minister of neglecting his responsibilities, alleging a failure to properly discharge the duties of his office.
The opposition said the no-confidence motion was submitted over the Minister's alleged failure to ensure accountability and take responsibility following the recent unrest at Negombo Prison, during which prison officers and inmates lost their lives. The opposition maintains that the incident raised serious concerns over prison security and the administration of the justice system, warranting parliamentary scrutiny of the Minister's conduct.
The debate on Friday is expected to provide members from both the government and the opposition an opportunity to present their positions on the allegations contained in the motion.
