According to the police,Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickramaratne has reportedly died after sustaining a gunshot injury at his residence in Athurugiriya.
He was admitted to Mulleriyawa Hospital on this morning of July 17, where hospital sources confirmed that he was pronounced dead on arrival.
C.D. Wickramaratne served in the Sri Lanka Police for more than 30 years and was the country's 35th Inspector General of Police.
Before being appointed IGP, he served as the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) in charge of the Southern Province.
Following the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks in 2019, then-IGP Pujith Jayasundara was sent on compulsory leave, after which Wickramaratne was appointed as the Acting Inspector General of Police.
He was officially confirmed as the Inspector General of Police on November 25, 2020, and served in the position until his retirement on November 25, 2023.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident.
Mr. Wickramaratne served as Sri Lanka's 35th Inspector General of Police and dedicated more than 30 years to the Sri Lanka Police Service.
