A police officer was seriously injured after a suspect allegedly seized the officer's firearm and opened fire during a violent struggle while officers attempted to make an arrest in the Dewamottawa area of Katunayake.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred when police officers confronted the suspect to carry out an arrest. During the ensuing confrontation, the suspect reportedly overpowered one of the officers, snatched the service weapon, and fired multiple shots, critically injuring a police officer.
The injured officer was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment. Police have launched an investigation into the incident, while efforts are underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
