Central Province Governor, Professor Sarath Abeykoon, has submitted his letter of resignation to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The Governor, who previously served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, noted that his decision to step down from the position is based on personal reasons.

As of now, there has been no official response from the President’s office regarding the resignation. It remains unclear whether the President has formally accepted or rejected the request, and no further comments have been issued by the presidential administration regarding the Governor's status.

The timing of this resignation coincides with a leadership vacancy in the administrative staff of the Central Province. The post of Secretary to the Governor of the Central Province is currently vacant following the recent retirement of Ms. Manjula Madahapola.

In light of the vacancy left by Ms. Madahapola, the Central Provincial Public Service Commission has appointed Mr. Ishan Wijetilleke to serve as the acting Secretary to the Governor.
