Sri Lanka Police have issued a public warning over fraudulent websites and text messages impersonating the government’s GovPay digital payment platform in an attempt to deceive users and steal money.
In a statement, Police said scammers have created fake websites designed to resemble the official GovPay platform, which is used to make online payments for a range of government services, including on-the-spot traffic fines.
Police also revealed that members of the public have received fraudulent text messages claiming to be from the Sri Lanka Police, alleging that recipients had committed speeding or other traffic offences and directing them to pay fines through unofficial web links.
The Police emphasised that traffic fines are issued only after officers inform motorists of the offence at the scene or initiate legal proceedings where necessary.
They further clarified that even when traffic violations are detected through CCTV or other surveillance systems, the Police do not send text messages requesting bank account details or directing motorists to settle fines through unofficial websites.
The public has been advised not to click on suspicious links or make payments through unverified websites. Anyone who receives such fraudulent messages or believes they have been targeted by the scam is urged to report the matter immediately to the nearest police station.
