The Presidential Fund will launch its special scholarship program, “Sarasavi Dhiriyo Abhiman,” aimed at recognising and supporting students with disabilities studying at Sri Lanka’s state universities. The inaugural ceremony will be held on Saturday, July 11, at Temple Trees, under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.
The initiative honours students who have pursued higher education despite physical challenges, reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring that disabilities do not stand in the way of educational aspirations.
Under the programme, all eligible students with disabilities currently enrolled in state universities will receive a one-time scholarship grant of Rs. 100,000 from the Presidential Fund.
At the inaugural event, 254 university students with disabilities will be recognised, while nearly 400 students have qualified to benefit from the programme nationwide.
Taking into consideration the difficulties faced by students travelling to Colombo, separate award ceremonies for beneficiaries from the Northern, North Central and Eastern Provinces are scheduled to be held in August.
The “Sarasavi Dhiriyo Abhiman” programme serves as a national recognition of the determination, talent and academic achievements of students with disabilities, while reinforcing the government’s policy that no physical limitation should become a barrier to achieving educational goals. It also represents a significant step towards promoting social inclusion and empowerment through education.
