The 75th anniversary celebration of the Colombo Plan was held at the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo on July 3 under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.

Delivering the keynote address, the Prime Minister reflected on the origins of the Colombo Plan, noting that it was established 75 years ago at a time when many Asian nations were emerging from colonial rule and facing significant challenges in post-war reconstruction and economic development.

She said it was a matter of great pride for Sri Lanka that the organization bears the name "Colombo" and that the country continues to serve as its host.

Highlighting Sri Lanka's ongoing efforts in digital transformation, sustainable transport, and resilient supply chains, Dr. Amarasuriya emphasized that the Colombo Plan's early investments in the country's energy, agriculture, irrigation, and transport sectors remain an important part of Sri Lanka's development foundation.

The Prime Minister also praised the Colombo Plan's Drug Advisory Programme for its continued contribution to combating drug-related challenges that affect youth, public health, and social stability. She reaffirmed that the Sri Lankan Government, under the leadership of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, has made the eradication of drug abuse a national priority and expressed appreciation for the organization's continued support.

Addressing the changing global landscape, Dr. Amarasuriya observed that today's world is far more complex than it was in 1951, shaped by rapid technological advances, climate challenges, and geopolitical developments. She stressed that regional organizations such as the Colombo Plan must continue to evolve with greater flexibility and broader cooperation. She also underscored the importance of strengthening collaboration in education and human capital development while promoting the value of international cooperation among younger generations.

During the ceremony, a special tribute was paid to Dr. Benjamin P. Reyes in recognition of his distinguished service as Secretary-General of the Colombo Plan over the past four years. The organization also formally welcomed H.E. Chulamee Chartsuwan as its new Secretary-General.

To commemorate the milestone, a special 75th anniversary postage stamp was officially unveiled, together with the launch of the commemorative publication, Colombo Plan 75 Years – 75 Stories.

Among those in attendance were Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Arun Hemachandra, Ambassador of Vietnam to Sri Lanka and Chair of the Colombo Plan Council Trinh Thi Tam, along with diplomats, government representatives, and other distinguished guests.
