Deputy Minister T.B. Sarath says the era of the country's capitalist elite dominating politics has come to an end, claiming that members of the former ruling class will soon face legal consequences for alleged past wrongdoing.
Speaking to the media, Sarath said the current administration, despite being in office for only one year and eight months, has brought about a historic political transformation. He said future governments would continue to be led by representatives of the working class rather than the wealthy elite, describing the present period as a turning point in the country's political history.
The Deputy Minister also claimed that legal action against several members of the former political establishment is gathering pace and alleged that many of them could be imprisoned within the next one to two years. He said those who are most vocal in criticising the government are doing so because they fear impending legal action.
Referring to recent legal developments, Sarath cited cases involving Wimal Weerawansa and his wife, and claimed that an arrest warrant has been issued for Basil Rajapaksa. He alleged that Rajapaksa could be arrested at any time, adding that the country's legal system is beginning to hold senior figures of the previous political establishment accountable.
