The Government has introduced a nationwide program to provide employment opportunities for young people who have successfully completed drug rehabilitation by linking them with more than 400,000 permanent job vacancies in the private sector.

Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Sunil Handunnetti said the initiative is designed to equip rehabilitated youth with vocational skills and facilitate their recruitment into industries currently experiencing labour shortages, including the construction, tile manufacturing, footwear, leather products and automobile sectors.

The Minister noted that the programme is intended to address workforce shortages by creating opportunities for Sri Lankan workers, reducing the need to depend on foreign labour.

The project will be implemented through a joint effort involving the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board, the Bureau of Rehabilitation, the Tertiary and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, and the Ministry of Industry.

Representatives from the Ministry of Industry, the Bureau of Rehabilitation and the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board attended the launch of the programme.
