The suspect, who serves under the Kalutara South Police Station, was taken into custody following a complaint lodged by a citizen regarding an ongoing vehicle-related investigation being handled by the Kalutara SCIB.

According to police sources, the officer had allegedly demanded a total bribe of Rs. 1.1 million from the complainant in exchange for releasing the vehicle and submitting the case to court in a routine manner without pursuing criminal charges.

Investigators revealed that the suspect had already received an initial payment of Rs. 100,000 on May 30. Acting on the complaint, CIABOC officials launched an operation and apprehended the officer last night while he was accepting the remaining Rs. 1 million inside a hotel, as previously arranged with the complainant.

The arrest was carried out by a team of officers from the Bribery Commission, who caught the suspect in the act during the sting operation.

The arrested Police Inspector is expected to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court for further legal proceedings.
