The measure is being introduced as part of the National Road Safety Programme aimed at reducing road accidents and improving passenger safety across the country's expressway network.
A special public awareness campaign on the new regulation was held on June 17 at the Kottawa Expressway Interchange. The programme was organized to educate motorists and the public about the importance of wearing seat belts and the legal requirements that will soon come into effect.
Authorities had previously granted a three-month grace period to allow drivers and passengers to familiarize themselves with the new rule. That grace period will end on June 19.
From that date onward, strict enforcement will begin, and individuals found violating the regulation will be subject to a fine of up to Rs. 1,000.
Officials emphasized that the initiative is intended to enhance road safety and reduce the severity of injuries in the event of traffic accidents on expressways.
