Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has called for immediate action against those responsible for the reported killing of another wild tusker in Sri Lanka.
In a social media post accompanied by images of the dead elephant, Premadasa described the incident as horrific, referring to information reportedly provided by the Department of Wildlife Conservation.
“One more tusker killed. A horrific sight, as reported by the Wildlife Department,” he said.
He urged the authorities to take immediate and decisive measures to prevent further killings of wild elephants and called for those responsible to be brought before the law and given the toughest possible punishment.
Describing those responsible as “environmental terrorists”, Premadasa also called on the public to unite to prevent further destruction of the country's wildlife.
The statement comes amid growing concerns over the deaths of wild tuskers in Sri Lanka, particularly following the recent death of the iconic tusker Kawanthissa.
Sajith Premadasa had previously called for stronger wildlife conservation measures, including a dedicated conservation programme and a special investigation into Kawanthissa's death.
