Yoshitha Rajapaksa, the second son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, was arrested this morning (17) by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC). The arrest took place shortly after he arrived at the commission's headquarters to record a statement regarding an ongoing investigation into his recruitment and controversial deployment within the Sri Lanka Navy.
Rajapaksa had originally been summoned to appear before investigators yesterday. However, he provided a written notification to the Commission stating his inability to attend due to a conflicting hearing in the Court of Appeal, prompting authorities to reschedule his appearance for this morning. Following a brief period of interrogation after his arrival, CIABOC officials officially took him into custody.
The core of the Bribery Commission's probe centers on the structural manipulation of standard military recruitment procedures to facilitate Rajapaksa's entry into the service and his subsequent admission to the prestigious British Royal Naval College.
