In a statement, the Police said the fraudulent messages are being circulated using unofficial phone numbers while falsely appearing to originate from the Sri Lanka Police.
According to police, recipients are directed to a fake website and instructed to pay fines for alleged traffic violations.
Authorities said the fraudulent website has been designed to closely imitate the official GovPay payment platform in an effort to deceive the public.
Police further warned that individuals who enter the website and attempt to make payments could have sensitive personal information, including credit and debit card details, stolen by scammers.
The Police urged the public to avoid clicking suspicious links received through SMS or WhatsApp and to remain vigilant regarding such messages.
Police also clarified that traffic fines should only be paid after motorists are officially notified of an offense by a police officer and issued an official fine slip through the GovPay system.
