According to police sources, the suspect officer is accused of unlawfully retaining the passports and allegedly demanding Rs. 300,000 from each individual in exchange for their release. Investigators believe the incident may be linked to an ongoing probe involving foreign nationals residing in the country under questionable circumstances.
The arrest was carried out following intelligence received by the Central Crime Investigation Bureau, after which a special investigation was launched. The suspect was taken into custody in the Veyangoda area and is expected to be produced before court.
Authorities are also investigating whether other officers or intermediaries were connected to the alleged extortion scheme. Further inquiries are underway to determine how the passports came into the possession of the OIC and whether additional foreign nationals were affected.
