According to the Police Media Division, the Vesak Full Moon Poya Day, regarded as the holiest occasion for Buddhists around the world, will fall on May 30, 2026. Authorities stated that large numbers of devotees are expected to participate in both Amisa Pooja and Prathipatti Pooja activities during the Vesak week.
Police said a special security plan covering all parts of the island will be implemented to allow the public to engage in religious activities freely, peacefully, and without inconvenience. Security arrangements will focus on sacred Buddhist sites, temples, Vesak zones, Dansal programmes, pandal exhibitions, lantern displays, and Bhakthi Gee performances where large crowds are expected.
Acting on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police, all police stations have been directed to introduce measures to minimise traffic congestion and improve public convenience in areas where Vesak events are being held.
Authorities stated that enhanced day and night mobile patrols, special police operations, and increased deployment of officers across all police divisions will be carried out to strengthen public safety and protect both people and property during the festive period.
Police also warned that strict legal action will be taken against individuals or groups engaging in behaviour that damages the dignity and sanctity of the Vesak festival or causes inconvenience to devotees.
A number of public guidelines have also been issued to maintain a peaceful Vesak environment. The public has been requested to avoid activities considered inappropriate for the religious season, including Olubakkan dancing, indecent costumes, and behaviour that undermines the spiritual nature of Vesak.
The use of loud music, particularly near Dansal and pandal sites, has also been discouraged. Police emphasised that loudspeakers must only be used responsibly and with the required legal approval.
Devotees and visitors attending Vesak events have further been advised to refrain from consuming alcohol or narcotic substances.
Organisers of Dansal programmes have been instructed to follow health and safety regulations and ensure proper crowd management to avoid congestion and traffic disruptions.
Police also urged motorists and visitors to avoid improper parking that could obstruct traffic flow and requested the public to dispose of waste responsibly and remain vigilant regarding personal belongings to prevent thefts.
Special attention has also been requested for the safety of children and elderly individuals visiting crowded locations during the Vesak period.
Members of the public have been encouraged to remain alert to suspicious activities and immediately report any concerns to the nearest police officer.
Authorities have also introduced special contact numbers for complaints and emergencies. Video evidence relating to road safety violations can be submitted via WhatsApp to 070-4755600, while complaints regarding vehicles emitting excessive smoke can be reported to 070-3500525. Emergency assistance can be obtained through police hotlines 118 and 119.
The Sri Lanka Police appealed to the public to cooperate with the guidelines and security measures to ensure a peaceful, respectful, and spiritually meaningful Vesak celebration throughout the country.
