Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (19), Rajapaksa said the war ended 17 years ago and credited the military, police, civil defence forces, and civilians from all communities for their role in the conflict’s conclusion.
He stressed that LTTE operations had targeted political leaders and civilians, and argued that the defeat of the organisation had contributed to improved conditions in the Northern Province, particularly in education and development.
Rajapaksa also said the sacrifices of “war heroes” should be recognised and warned against attempts to reinterpret the nature of the conflict. He further emphasised the need to preserve national unity and acknowledged the contribution of those involved in the war effort.
